Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

This visa is for invited workers, eligible New Zealand citizens and eligible Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport holders with skills the Australian needs. You can study, live and work anywhere in Australia without any restrictions.

This visa comes in three different streams:
1. Point-tested Stream
2. New-Zealand Stream
3. Hong Kong Stream

Skilled Independent Visa – Subclass 189 (Point-tested Stream)

It is a point based General Skilled Migration Visa. This stream is for the skilled worker, who does not have a family or employer sponsorship in Australia. This stream requires the applicant to lodge the Expression of Interest (EOI).With the Subclass 189 Visa, you can embark on a journey to live and work anywhere in Australia, bringing your valuable skills to industries in need. Who Can Apply for subclass 189 Visa in Point Tested Stream?

To apply this visa:

Occupation must in the MLTSSL List specified the subclass 189 visa subclass
At the time of invitation to apply for the Subclass 189 visa the relevant assessing authority must have assessed the applicant’s skills as suitable for the applicant’s nominated skilled occupation.
Skills must be assessed for the same occupation
The skill assessment is valid for maximum 3 years if not stated on the skill assessment.
Must lodged an EOI and the primary applicant must have been invited, in writing by the Minister, to apply for the visa.
To qualify, you must attain a minimum of 65 points in your Expression of Interest (EOI). You can calculate your points by reaching out to our Migration Agent, who will evaluate your point score at no cost to you.
Applicant must not have turned 45 at the time of invitation.
Applicants are required to demonstrate that, at the time of invitation to apply for a Subclass 189 visa, the applicant had competent Englisht
the language test used to demonstrate that the applicant has competent English must have been undertaken within the 3 years immediately before the date of the invitation to apply
Must meet the health and character requirements
Assessed score must be at least equal to the score stated in the invitation

How many steps involved in subclass 189 application?

Step 1 – Check if your occupation is in MLTSSL List and you have accrued minimum 65 points, you can contact us for a preliminary assessment
Step 2 – The main applicant must possess a valid skill assessment, an acceptable English score, and meet the age, health, and character criteria.
Step 2 – Submit your Expression of Interest (EOI) for the Subclass 189 visa.
Step 3 – Await the invitation from the Department of Home Affairs following the submission of your Expression of Interest (EOI) for the Subclass 189 visa.
Step 4 – Collect all your documents and check details in invited EOI
Step 4 – Ensure that you submit a decision-ready application to the department.
Step 5 – Apply for the visa within 60 days of your invitation



Validity of Visa subclass 189

The visa remains valid for five years from the date of grant, enabling holders to travel to and from Australia during this time. Once this period ends, individuals who are not yet Australian citizens must apply for a Resident Return visa to continue traveling to Australia.

Base application charges - $4640
Secondary applicant over 18 - $2320
Additional applicant under 18 - $1160


If the additional family member does not have functional English, then second installment of $4885 will be required.

New Zealand Stream - First Instalment and second Instalment

Base application charges - $850 & 3390
Secondary applicant over 18 - $425 & 1695
Additional applicant under 18 - $210 & 850



Application Processing Time

Curious about the processing time for the subclass 189 visa? It can vary, but you'll find the latest updates on the Department's website (Global visa processing time). As of February 2024, for the point-tested stream, 90% of applications are finalized within 12 months. Meanwhile, for the New Zealand stream, expect 90% of applications to be processed within 25 months.

English Requirements for subclass 189 visa

Did you know that English proficiency is crucial for the Subclass 189 visa? To lodge your application, you'll need at least competent English. However, having proficient English earns you an extra 10 points, while superior English gets you an extra 20 points for the Subclass 189 visa. The higher your points, the sooner you'll receive an invitation from the department. So, aim for higher proficiency to boost your chances!

Competent English - Scoring at least 6 on each of the four components (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, or equivalent scores in other recognized English proficiency tests such as PTE. A PTE score of 50 corresponds to a score of 6 in the IELTS exam.
Proficient English - Scoring at least 7 on each of the four components (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, or equivalent scores in other recognized English proficiency tests such as PTE. A PTE score of 65 corresponds to a score of 7 in the IELTS exam.
Superior English - Scoring at least 8 on each of the four components (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, or equivalent scores in other recognized English proficiency tests such as PTE. A PTE score of 79 corresponds to a score of 8 in the IELTS exam.

Where the applicant must be to be granted their visa

To be granted a Subclass 189 visa, the applicant (whether a primary applicant or secondary applicant) may be in or outside of Australia but not in immigration clearance. Applicants do not need to be in the same location as when the application was made as at time of decision. Nor do all members of the family unit need to be in the same location.

As a holder of this visa, you and your family members must adhere with the Australian Law and the Visa condition.



Visa Conditions for Subclass 189 Visa:

8504 - The applicant is outside Australia when the visa is granted, first entry must be made before the date specified by the Minister.
8515 - Must not marry or enter into de facto relationship before entering in Australia.
